How to contact our team
Groundwork North East is the region's foremost environmental regeneration charity. We work across the North East’s most deprived areas to improve the quality of people's lives. Doing this is complex and involves a lot of different projects, all of which contribute to our overall vision of a society of sustainable communities.
The first North East trust was established in East Durham in 1985 to meet the needs of communities suffering as a result of the then recent pit closures which set the tone for our work over the next 25 years. This trust was soon joined by West Durham, South Tyneside and Middlesbrough, these trusts then expanded across other areas and have been joined in recent years by Northumberland enabling us to have a presence in every sub-region.
As a national federation, Groundwork had emerged from the urban fringe experiment developed in the late 1970’s by the Countryside Commission as a way to test new approaches to restoring and managing neglected and derelict land in the margins between town and country.
We have over twenty-five years’ experience of delivering bespoke projects that use the environment as a catalyst for building a more sustainable future. Each year we deliver around 500 projects across the region, with a value in excess of £17m, helping improve the quality of people’s lives, their prospects and potential and the places where they live, work and play. Groundwork has been offering its services in Cumbria for two years now, working alongside local communities, public bodies, private companies and other voluntary sector organisations to support communities in need and in October 2010 Cumbria officially became part the Groundwork North East operational area.
