Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle has recently launched a new FREE outdoor exercise programme designed to suit people of all ages and abilities including families.  The Tyneside Blue Gym offers a range of activities next to, on or in open water and will provide a great opportunity to get fit and improve health and wellbeing whilst making new friends, learning new skills and having fun.

Nordic walking, health walks, conservation, environmental improvement work and sports and games will be on offer at various locations across South Tyneside and Newcastle. Research has proven that regular contact with the natural environment results in many benefits including reduction in stress, increased physical activity, stronger communities and an increased awareness of the value of the natural environment.  The Blue Gym follows on from the success of the Green Gym that currently attracts over 400 people every year to activities in parks and open spaces across South Tyneside and Newcastle.

Nicola Bruce, Groundwork Green Exercise project officer said “We are thrilled to have secured Lottery funding to enable us to offer this new opportunity to the local community in South Tyneside, especially families who will really benefit from exercising together in the outdoors”.

The Tyneside Blue Gym has been funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund and Green Exercise in South Tyneside is supported through South Tyneside PCT.
